Apple’s Mac Air - Should be the lowest Cost Laptop

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Apple recently announce the Mac Air.  Which according to the specs and system features should be much cheaper than the MacBook.  Why?  Check out the components;

  • Motherboard / CPU component
  • LED backlit display
  • Missing Removable Drive
  • Non removable battery
  • Standard Keyboard
  • Non - standard Large Trackpad
  • One USB port
  • One audio out port
  • Micro DVI
  • Missing network socket

This laptop is $1,800 and the price should go down quickly over time. There are not many components and a lot of standards here.

Apple could easily come  up with an educational version for sub $500.00.

3 Drive Backup Method

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

This was written by another on the web that used choice words I would rather not reuse here.  It is very good advise to backup your data.

  • You have a computer. It came with a hard drive in it. Go buy two more drives of the same size or larger. If the drive in your computer is SATA2, get SATA2. If it’s a 2.5″ laptop drive, get two of those. Brand doesn’t matter, but physical measurements and connectors should match.
  • Get external enclosures for both of them. The enclosures are under $30.
  • Put one of these drives in its enclosure on your desk. Name it something clever like “Backup”. If you are using a Mac, the command you use to back up is this:

sudo rsync -vaxE –delete –ignore-errors / /Volumes/Backup/

  • If you’re using Linux, it’s something a lot like that.
  • If you have a desktop computer, have this happen every morning at 5AM by creating a temporary text file containing this line:

    0 5 * * * rsync -vaxE –delete –ignore-errors / /Volumes/Backup/

and then doing sudo crontab -u root that-file

  • If you have a laptop, do that before you go to bed. Really. Every night when you plug your laptop in to charge.
  • If you’re on a Mac, that backup drive will be bootable. That means that when (WHEN) your internal drive scorches itself, you can just take your backup drive and put it in your computer and go. This is nice.
  • When (WHEN) your backup drive goes bad, which you will notice because your last backup failed, replace it immediately. This is your number one priority. Don’t wait until the weekend when you have time, do it now, before you so much as touch your computer again. Do it before breakfast. The universe tends toward maximum irony. Don’t push it.
  • That third drive? Do a backup onto it the same way, then take that to your office and lock it in a desk. Every few months, bring it home, do a backup, and immediately take it away again. This is your “my house burned down” backup.

Radio Shift

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I heard about this on a Macworld podcast.  Very interesting. There are many shows that I miss because I work during the day.  Rush Limbaugh, Dave Ramsey Show.  This enables me to record these shows as they happen then transfer them to iTunes for listen in my car or on my iPod.

Sounds very cool.

The added feature is that they have an integrated Radio Guide which they have licensed from “Radio Time, Inc.”.  Just find the radio show  you are interested in and record it.  Also interesting that there are radio shows from all over the globe in the database.

Macworld Hopes?

Monday, January 14th, 2008

The Apple Keynote is Tuesday around noon.  This is my wish;

  • A phone
    • that is under $100.00
    • will sync with my mac and ALL the cool new Leopard features
    • will work with verizon wireless phone plans
    • has bluetooth
    • has a decent camera
    • has decent resolution screen 320×240
    • has upgradable memory
    • can play videos I put on it

That’s it.  I can’t afford much else.  We will see what shows up.

Screen Spanning Doctor w/ Leopard

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

I have used Screen Spanning Doctor when ever i wanted to extend my iMac to another monitor.  It has always worked great under Tiger, but will no longer work under Mac os X Leopard 10.5.  Too bad.  Maybe it will get updated.

Screen Spanning Doctor is a hack that allows the option in the display preference panel to allow for extending your desktop to another monitor.  Currently iMac only supports Mirroring to another monitor.
