Tahoe – Great Gas Mileage!

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Wow,  21mph for a GM Tahoe.

I drive about 18,000 miles per year. To and from work.  About 75 miles round trip.  I get about 25mpg.  I use about 735 gallons per year.  That’s about $2,205.00 per year in gas expenses.  Over five years I spend about $11,025.00 in gas alone.  How much gas mileage would a car need to have before it saved me enough money to buy a new car over 5 years.

I was questioning this as to the individual motivation to save money with a “green” or fuel efficient car.  If a fuel efficient car did get 50mpg I have only saved about $6,000.00 over 5 years.  Unfortunately the fuel efficient cars are 25-30% more in cost than a normal car that is not “fuel efficient”.  It just doesn’t pay to buy “Green”.  Yet.

By the way a new car over 5 years will never happen in our household.  We are on the Dave Ramsey plan for our finances.  Pay cash for everything.  If we don’t save up the money, no car.

This Car Runs on Air

I heard about this months ago, but thought it would not make it further.  Looks like I was wrong.  I wonder how it would do on the highway.

Electric Cars

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

When I heard about the movie – who killed the electric car – I was very skeptical, being that I would love to see the critics of the automotive industry put their money and effort where their mouth is. Looks like some are trying to do that. It will be interesting to see if they can achieve what the Industry has not been able to. I applaud all who try and maybe they can change the entire system for the better.

Electric cars will start at $30k up to $100K. Hmm, what is the break even point for cost savings of electric over gas? at $3/gallon, what is the cost to charge a car  and how long would it take you to recoup the $15-20k premium. For a $30K  electric car you are getting the same in a gas guzzler for $10K. I won’t be purchasing one soon.
