Natural History
Was entertaining myself with a copy of “Natural History” magazine. The eye catcher was an article on Amebeas and their “self sacrificing” properties. I began to read my first thoughts on the article I will mentioned last in this post. The idea was that these Amebeas will sacrifice themselves in the attempt to create a tall structure in which, at the top the spores will collect and distribute themselves.
Question 1 in regards to self:
Does an amebea have a self? In order to be self sacrificial doesn’t one need be conscience of the self? I will tell you that I am the father of three and an infant is not quite conscious of itself. Let alone capable of “self sacrifice”. My infant - I would consider intelligent, but would not consider her capable of decision making to the level of giving her life for the better of another.
Question 2 is the amebea intelligent? NO.
Question 3 on self sacrifice:
Again, doesn’t self sacrifice imply reason and moral decision making? Morality and decision making don’t come from amebeas.
Ok, if all of my logic fails to this point in my criticism of a so called “scientific magazine” then the question is where does the self sacrificial characteristic or “genes” come from? I will answer my first and initial response - GOD. The Christian view is that God created and his character and life is found though out His creation. God’s primary character is self-sacrificial at the core. Jesus, “God in man” sacrificed himself for mankind. So I could see amebeas with a self-sacrificial character if once could accept the impossibility required by “self” and “sacrifice”.
What is a science magazine doing writing stuff like this. Science is about observation, not creating a new flavor of religion.
